Matsuhiro Shoten, near the geisha district of Gion, stocks wonderful clutches (shown), handbags and wallets made from kimono fabrics in an endless array of patterns. Sanjo-dori, Ohashi Higashi-iru 3–12, Higashiyama-ku; 011-81-75-761-5469.

Buy a handwrought knife at Aritsugu, one of Japan's oldest knife makers, at the Nishiki Market, and the artisans there may be able to engrave it with your name in Japanese. Kajiya-tyo, Gokomachi, Nishiiru, Nishikikouji, Nakagyo-ku; 011-81-75-221-1091.
